The Astrology Chart

The astrology chart is illustrated as a wheel divided into parts based on the signs, and the Houses, Planets (including the sun and moon), Angles, Aspects, Elements, and Qualities of the zodiac.  Each facet of the chart is divided individually into equal parts of the 360° wheel.  The astrology chart can be either natal (the position of the chart at the time of one’s birth, mapping the individual‘s traits and characteristics) or progressive (the map of one’s future and fortune).

Each of the 12 signs of the astrology chart is representative of a constellation that can be seen in the sky during a period of the 12 month zodiac cycle. The first sign is Aries, beginning at 0°, followed chronologically in 30° increments on the chart by Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces.  The sign under which an individual is born determines his or her personality type, character traits, and behaviors.

The astrology chart is further divided into 12 Houses, each House associated with a planet and a sign. Each House is ruled by its corresponding sign – Aries, the first sign, rules the 1st House; the second sign, Taurus, rules the 2nd House, etc.  The Houses are twelve components of one’s life, outlook, and potential:  the self, possessions, communication (including intelligence and relationships), family/home, pleasure/creativity, (which includes romance and love of the arts), health, partnerships, sexuality, philosophy (spiritual growth and higher learning), social status, friendships, and the subconscious, respectively.

The Planets exert their influence either positively or negatively depending on their position and the individual’s birth sign.  A planet will have its strongest power over the sign it governs.  For example, Saturn has the greatest influence over Capricorns and Aquarians, the 10th & 11th Houses.  As with the Houses, each Planet governs a facet or energy in one’s life.

There are four Angles which divide the astrology wheel into quadrants.  Each of the quadrants represents a phase of self-development tied in with its three correspondent Houses on the astrology chart.  The first quadrant encompasses the first three Houses, focusing on the self, possessions and self-expression.  The second quadrant converges on development outside of the self – relationships with and concern for others. The third quadrant concentrates on the effect of one’s actions and beliefs and how they affect others and the environment.  The fourth quadrant is a guide to the development of one’s innermost self – the true satisfactions in life, and one’s dream’s and secrets.

The Aspects of the astrology chart speak to the challenges and hardships that must be overcome to achieve harmony and balance in one’s life.  Specifically, aspects are signified by angles on the wheel – geometrical relationships between the Planets and points in the zodiac – and are expressed in terms of degrees.

The four Elements (90° each on the wheel), as presented on an individual’s astrology chart reading, characterize one’s core personality. The four elements are fire, earth, air, and water.  The fire signs are Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius, recognized by their fiery temperaments and lively personas. Earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn) are loyal, reliable, and practical.  The element Air is associated with the Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius – curious, intelligent, and perceptive.  Water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces) are sensitive, nurturing, and intuitive.

Finally, the Qualities divide the Astrology wheel into three 120° sections.  The Qualities are indicative of one’s behavioral modality – Cardinal, Fixed, and Mutable.  The Cardinal signs are Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn, characterized by their drive, initiative, and creativity.  Fixed signs are Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius – determined and stable maintainers of the status quo.  Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces are the Mutable signs, whose approach to life tends to be flexible, readily adapting to change as it presents itself.
